Fishing Report for Pamlico, Craven, Carteret & Onslow Counties
Source: NCDMF
Ocean: The wahoo bite this week was great! Every charter boat from the Morehead City waterfront that went out this weekend came back with a handful or two of them, a few weighing in over 50 pounds! Those trolling for wahoo came back with a few blackfin tuna in the mix also. Bottom fishing this past week was pretty spectacular also. Anglers caught lots of triggerfish, large black sea bass, some huge white grunts (one weighing in at 4 pounds!), a few grouper here and there and also some American red snapper. One of the Americans caught weighed 27 pounds! The vermilion snapper closed season began on Sunday Nov. 1, and it will not reopen until April 1st 2010 (See link above for more information)

Inlets/Sounds/Bays: The White Oak River turned out a number of good sized speckled trout and red drum this week. For anglers who were flounder fishing it was much like other weeks, with about one out of every 5 flounder caught being of legal size. Anglers casting a line in the Bay River area and in the waters around Bath had good luck with speckled trout again this week. The Virginia mullet (whiting) were sparse this week just about everywhere, but in and around the Beaufort inlet. Not only was that the only place that the whiting were caught, but many of those caught from that area were of good size. Spot fishing continues to be fruitful in the ICW near the Emerald Isle high rise bridge and at the base of White Oak River.

Piers/Shore: The surf and pier fishing continues to be hit or miss just as it has been over the past weeks. Those who there at the right time caught a mixed bag of pompano, spadefish, LOTS of large puffers, blues, and a few whiting here and there. The spot haven't really been showing up at the piers or in the surf this week as they were previously. Fishing for blues was been better this week than in the past weeks from the shore/piers. Although they are not huge, the numbers continue to be good.

Shackleford Banks Fishing Report
The Latest Fishing Report 11-11-2009
By Captain Marty Moore at Topwater Charters

A beautiful day, but not quite as fishy as I had hoped. Maybe I just gave up too quickly. The weather was getting prettier all the time and conditions were getting right for exploring farther to the East (where I love to fish!) when I came home at 2pm. Here's how the day went. Albacore fishing was good, not great.

The fish were not staying up very long at all. It took a little luck and a lot of moving around this morning to stay on the fish. My first cast of the day connected on a 10 lb Albacore. I also caught a 8 lb Albacore on my 5 wt Fly Rod. The best fish of the day came on my Trout Rod with 6# test. I was searching the Shackleford Beach for Red Drum when I saw 5 Albacore cruising right up in the surf. I made a good cast and the race was ON!

The fastest Albacore got there first and got released 10 minutes later. In between those 3 fish came a lot of casting and 3 other Albacore. I think the better Albacore Fishing was to the West, but like the variety that I normally find to the East! The most interesting thing of the day was the incredible numbers of Summer Flounder that are in the Shackleford Surf. In about an hour of effort I released 20 Summer Flounders and found 3 keepers at 15" each. I was casting a 5" White Jerk Bait right up on the sand to get strikes from these fish.

Hook one and sometimes 2 or 3 others would follow it to the Boat! Finally, I got a tip on a school of Red Drum and I went and found them. One small group of maybe 15 Red Drum in the surf at Rough Point. My first and only cast connected on a fiesty 24" Red Drum. That's it! Total Catch for the Day: 6 Albacore, 23 Summer Flounder and 1 Red Drum **2235 Total Fish in 2009**

Fishing Report November 11, 2009
Former tropical storm Ida is blessing us in southeastern N.C. with a few showers. But that does not deter the Fishing Report, especially when we have such good reporters! Dr. Jeff Wallen of Myrtle Beach and OIB reports that he fished with live shrimp Sunday and caught 2 18"+ trout and several slot redfish. he bought his shrimp in Murrells Inlet. Captain Jeff Williamson (Get Busy/OIFC) decided to return from deer hunting and sent this picture of some flounder caught in the Lockwoods Folly River by Jeremy Ridenhour. Jeremy was using B & M PK 5's. Also, Jamie Blue of Clemson Univ. updated his earlier report with a picture of a blackfin tuna caught on Martin, Joe and Chris McLoed's fishing trip . ~ Capt. flounder gigging in North Carolinablackfin tuna fishing in North Carolina"Rainy Day Report" 11/11/09
Needless to say nobody is fishing the OIFC.com KMT today. I don't believe there will be any fishing until the weekend according to the weather forecast. Right now it's raining sideways and when the rain quits the wind is not, at least until Saturday. This is good though. We need a break after last weekends adventure. My arms and back are still sore from doing battle with all the monster kingfish.

Today is a good day to think about the upcoming winter months as this weather is somewhat typical during that time. First up will be the Bluefin Tuna madness again in December and January. We have placed the welcome signs and encouraged the pogies to stick around so hopefully the bluefin will once again make an appearance right here outside our back door at Ocean Isle. After the bluefin have moved on, the arrival of February and March means its time to either clean out the basement or search for warmer latitudes and the next great bite. That is where the Traveling Fisherman program comes into play. The OIFC is putting together a trip to head down to Panama, Central America and fish for giant black marlin, blue marlin, sailfish, huge yellowfin tuna, roosterfish and snapper. The trip is slated for March 14th-19th at the Paradise Fishing Lodge. We'll be fishing 4 full days aboard the center console fleet while accomodations, food, and cocktails will be provided at the fishing lodge for 5 nights.

For an adventure of this caliber we were able to secure an excellent rate of $2600 per person for 3 per/boat. This includes everything but airfare to Panama, transportation to the lodge and gratuity. We will be fishing the world famous Hannibal Banks and Montosa Island using a variety of techniques including live bait, casting top water plugs and trolling lures. From my own experience down there I can promise there is no where on Earth with the variety, quality and quantity of gamefish. We have several fishermen and fisherwomen interested in the trip but there is space remaining. It's a great opportunity to travel to an exotic fishing location with a group of familiar fellow fishermen and fisherwomen. Deposits are due by January 1, 2010. Email captbarrett@oifc.com if you're interested in joining the team.
For now we'll watch it rain, recover from recent battles, and dream about the next fish.
~ Capt. Barrett McMullan

"Wahoo/Sailfish" OIFC 1- 36' 11/10/09
The OIFC has been asked fairly frequently lately for wahoo reports. Well Steven Smith has come along to save the day!!! Sunday he was fishing in the Stream, near the Blackjack, at a depth of 250 feet of 80 degree water. Steven said that they had several wahoo hits and a nice sailfish using an OIFC Custom Wahoo Rig. They landed one wahoo and released the sail.

As we all know Saturday and Sunday were just tourism bureau excellent days. By all predictions we are in for some nasty weather the next couple of days. It should be oughta here before the weekend, but we'll have to see what it does to the water conditions as far as fishing is concerned.

Ocracoke, NC Fishing Report November 10, 2009
Tradewinds Bait & Tackle

November 10, 2009 - We had another day of beautiful weather yesterday. It looked like a commerical for Key West but the fish really don't like it that calm and pretty. We finally started to see some cloud cover and the surf start to kick up this morning. There were lots of reports of puffer fish in the surf, small flounder and skates.

Nathan Wright of Hickory, NC came by with his keeper flounder yesterday and let me get a photo for the website. The other photos are from Sunday afternoon when Ocracoke Youth Center took 4th and 5th graders out to the beach. Jason, Alan and Mary Dean took the time to show some of Ocracoke's kids surf fishing. The kids all caught something and had a great time enjoying the beach and learning about surf fishing. Hope they will try it again.

Have fun fishing! ~ Melinda
